The Minister of State in Charge of Social Affairs and Social Protection in the Ministry of Local Government, Dr. MUKABARAMBA Alvera visited Rusororo VUP Public Work activities to assess its progress and social-economic impact. She urged beneficiaries to embrace financial saving culture for self-reliance and sustainable development.

Over 400 residents in Rusororo Sector are employed under the public works component of the Vision 2020 Umurenge Program (VUP). The aim is to ensure migration and graduation from extreme poverty. Most of the residents praised the program for having uplifted them from vulnerable and jobless life to a certain level of self-sustained income.

Ndayisaba Celestin, a resident who works under VUP said: “After I was hired in Vision Umurenge Programme, I became able to provide some domestic basic need to my family and I can now pay for my medical insurance. Public Works is very significant to our life as far as financial impact is concerned.”

The Minister of State in Charge of Social Affairs and Social Protection appealed to the residents to embrace the principles of saving as one of the ways to restrain poverty and reach development targets.

She said: “From now on; the payment process is going to be improved. You are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to embrace saving culture so that you can uplift yourself from poverty. You can save as little as you can in order to attain a big dream. You can save 5000 Frw today and 5000 Frw tomorrow.”

Vision 2020 Umurenge Programme (VUP) - is an Integrated Local Development Programme that was put in place by the Government of Rwanda with the objective of putting in place different projects to accelerate poverty eradication, rural growth, and social protection. VUP encompasses three major categories: direct support, financial services and public works.
