POLYGAMY IS SOURCE OF ENDLESS INTRA-FAMILY CONFLICTS – Minister Kaboneka

15 03 2017

The Minister of Local Government Hon. KABONEKA Francis urged, today, the residents of Rugarama Sector in Burera district to avoid polygamy as it has proved to be amongst major sources of intra family conflicts in Rwanda.

Minister Kaboneka made the appeal during his official visit in Burera District where he participated in the citizens’ complaints resolution session that takes place every Wednesday of the week.

Together with local officials, Minister Kaboneka received different complaints and opinions from the residents, and most of them were polygamy related; reason why he emphasized on the consequences of the polygamy.

“I have assessed and identified serious problems with polygamy through the complaints you have raised. Succession and land related conflicts start with parents and continue amongst their children. They become endless. Such a situation instigates hatred amongst community and family members. There were times when our ancestors used to marry many women and have many children because they had enough land to share. Gone are those days. So let’s avoid polygamy; it’s like inviting conflicts in your home.” Minister Kaboneka told the residents.

Minister Kaboneka also requested the residents to eradicate the use and consumption of Kanyanga. The residents were reminded of exploiting development opportunities that surround them including Agakiriro, schools, hospitals, roads among others for their welfare; to sustain, unity, security and hygiene.
