SOUTH AFRICAN PARLIAMENT ON A STUDY TOUR IN RWANDA

The Minister of Local Government, Honorable Francis Kaboneka, received today in his office the visiting South African Parliament delegation, which are on a one week long study tour on governance, democracy and gender equity.

The delegation from the Gauteng Provincial Legislature was led by the Speaker Hon Lentheng Ntombi Mekgwe, and was made of four members of parliament and two support staff.

The experience to be gained from Rwanda would assist them in strengthening their work as elected public representatives and make democracy work better for their electorate.

Minister Kaboneka elaborated about citizen participation, empowerment and inclusiveness, and he emphasized the role of citizens in good governance promotion and local development and hygiene and cleanliness.

Minister Kaboneka said that; “all sustainable development, peace and democracy is a result of unity and shared vision by citizens, with governance systems built on consensus, transparency and accountability”.

The two sides held a two hours long discussion, which focused on the functioning of local governments and local elected leaders and councilors, especially the volunteers, and the role of the citizens in local economic development.

They agreed on regular exchange of information and experience, and committed to partnerships in areas of good governance and citizens empowerment.
