SAVE TODAY; ENJOY YOUR RETREAT – DR. MUKABARAMBA

8th of October, 2017

Rwandans across the country celebrated the International Day of Elderly Persons, which is celebrated on the 1st of October. At national level, celebrations took place at Kanjongo Sector in Nyamasheke District where the elderly persons, friends and family members reflected on decent elderly life.

The Minister of State for Social Affairs and Social Protection in the Ministry of Local Government, Dr Alvera Mukabaramba, was the guest of honor. She reminded the public that the day is celebrated to reawaken the attention of the community members towards the elderly persons.

Dr. Mukabaramba told the public that: “The elderly persons need our attention and support. Family members are supposed to help hem and the government support to intervene in case the families are unable to do so.”

“Despite the family law requiring children to look after their parents while being needy or vulnerable, especially at advanced age, our culture of supporting elderly people should be put revived nowadays,” she said.

Dr Mukabaramba requested the gathering to remember to work hard and save for their future as this year theme mainly emphasizes on saving.

“Your future starts from today, and not tomorrow”, she said, adding that; “young people should save during their active life as they plan for their future”.

Mukarushema Christine expressed her gratitude to the leadership of President Paul Kagame for supporting them through inclusive social protection programs such as Girinka and VUP among others.

During the ceremony, some of elderly persons were offered cows and goats for milk and their social economic development.
